How it works
Choose a PNG image, with or without transparency.
Set WebP quality and generate a copy at the source dimensions.
Inspect fine details and transparent edges, compare sizes and download.
A WebP copy of your PNG
PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparent images. WebP also supports transparency and can offer smaller files for some web uses. This tool writes a still WebP using the browser’s quality-controlled encoder.
The output is not promised to be lossless. A WebP quality setting is a trade-off for the visible image, not a guarantee that every decoded source pixel will be reproduced exactly.
Transparency stays useful
Transparent regions are retained when the browser supports WebP encoding. You do not need to choose a solid background as you would for JPG.
Check partly transparent edges and soft shadows carefully. A preview background helps reveal those edges, but it is not added to the downloaded WebP. Place the result on its intended background before publishing when color blending matters.
Photographs and graphics behave differently
A photographic PNG can be a good candidate for a smaller lossy format. Flat-color graphics, line drawings and tiny labels may already be efficient in PNG or may show compression changes more clearly.
Compare the file actually produced instead of assuming that changing the extension saves space. Some images become larger, and a smaller file may still be unsuitable if its important details are softened.
Keep the source for later edits
Retain the PNG if you need its original pixel data for editing or archiving. Converting a lossy WebP back to PNG cannot reconstruct detail discarded at this step.
Images are decoded and encoded locally, with no selected image-file upload to 4ool servers. If the browser cannot produce the requested WebP format, the tool reports an error instead of presenting a different format as WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Will the WebP keep transparent areas?
Yes, supported WebP encoding retains transparency. Unlike JPG, WebP does not require a solid background.
Is this a lossless PNG-to-WebP conversion?
No lossless guarantee is made. This tool uses the browser’s quality-controlled WebP encoder, which can change visible pixel detail.
Why is my WebP not smaller?
The PNG may already be efficient for its content. Encoder settings and image detail affect the final size, so compare the actual files.
Should I delete the PNG after conversion?
Keep it if you may edit the image again or need its original pixel data. A later conversion cannot undo information lost through lossy encoding.
