How it works
Choose a .jpg or .jpeg image.
Create a PNG copy at the original pixel dimensions.
Compare the preview and file sizes, then download your PNG.
What changes from JPG to PNG?
JPG, also called JPEG, usually stores photographs with lossy compression. That makes files compact by discarding some image information. PNG stores its pixel data losslessly and is commonly used for graphics, screenshots and images that need transparency.
The converter decodes your JPG and writes those decoded pixels into a PNG. Width and height stay the same. The resulting file uses a different compression method, rather than becoming a more detailed version of the photograph.
Lost JPEG quality does not come back
Converting to PNG cannot recover detail already discarded when the JPG was created. Existing blur, block artifacts or ringing around edges remains part of the decoded image.
PNG can be useful for a later editing workflow because saving a PNG does not add another JPEG compression step. Start from the highest-quality source available, and keep that source if you plan further edits.
Expect a different file size
Photographs contain many colors and fine variations that JPEG compresses efficiently. PNG often needs more bytes for the same decoded photograph, so a much larger result can be normal.
Use PNG when your workflow requires it, rather than expecting it to optimize every photo. If your main aim is a smaller web image, JPG to WebP or Compress Image may be a better fit.
Transparency and local conversion
PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has no transparent pixels to preserve. This conversion does not remove a background or create transparent regions. The visible JPG background remains visible in the PNG.
The file is processed locally and is not uploaded to 4ool servers. The new PNG preserves the image dimensions, but source metadata and embedded profiles are not copied exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. It preserves the decoded JPG pixels in a lossless format, but cannot restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.
Will my PNG have a transparent background?
No. PNG supports transparency, but converting an opaque JPG does not remove its existing background.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG uses a different, lossless compression method. Photographs often take substantially more space in PNG than in JPEG.
Are .jpg and .jpeg both accepted?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format, and both filename extensions are supported.
